Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Through Service
This month I had the pleasure of developing and organizing a community service project that students at Fresno State chose to take part in to honor Martin Luther King Jr. Working in partnership with AmeriCorps VIP Fellow Lauren Smoot, we were able to purchase and assemble 100 Valentine’s Day gift bags.
A total of 74 students gathered to write a personal note to each child and assembled their very own gift bag filled with pencils, erasers, stickers, bookmarks, and festive candies. Perhaps most fun was reading the messages students wrote offering well wishes on Valentine’s Day and providing words of wisdom. One message read, “Remember you are always worth it and that you are special.”
A total of 100 bags were created and will be distributed to children served by the Bulldog Pantry (a local student-run food pantry) and tochildren at the Boys & Girls Club in El Dorado Park.
Special thanks to the 74 students for taking the time out of their busy day to put a smile on a child’s face!
